1. Sturdy and durable
Generally speaking, wine display racks must bear considerable weight, as each shelf holds a certain number of bottles. A simple calculation reveals that standard 750ml bottles, including the weight of the glass, weigh approximately 1kg each. With racks typically featuring 3-4 tiers, each holding 4-5 bottles, the total load capacity is roughly: 1kg × 3 tiers × 4 bottles = 12kg.
From a load-bearing perspective alone, metal display racks are undoubtedly the most suitable option. However, wine is packaged in glass bottles, making it a fragile product. The rigid metal shell can easily cause damage if it comes into contact with the product during handling, rendering this material highly unsuitable for items with glass packaging.
Wooden display units (MDF/solid wood) meet the overall load-bearing requirements while sharing material similarities with the oak barrels used in wine production. Such displays subtly convey the artisanal value behind each drop of fine wine to consumers, thereby enhancing the product's perceived worth.
2. Aroma
As we know, wine is produced through fermentation and becomes more aromatic with age. Even during display and sale, wine continues to undergo fermentation. To maintain breathability during this process, the cork in the bottle neck allows external gases to permeate slowly into the wine.
At this stage, the surrounding air environment demands particular attention, especially the display rack in close contact with the wine. The intensity and duration of smoking and sun-drying processes applied to solid wood wine racks prior to manufacture impart distinct aromas. During the wine's storage and fermentation, the wood's fragrance permeates through the cork into the wine, enriching its bouquet.
3. Horizontal Shelving
As mentioned earlier, some wines employ cork closures while others utilise screw caps. Do these differing sealing methods impact the display rack?
The answer is unequivocally yes. Wines sealed with cork remain in a partially sealed state, allowing the liquid to undergo gradual oxidation and decomposition through minimal air contact. Such wines must be stored in a perfectly horizontal position. Storing them upright or at an angle prevents the cork from maintaining full contact with the liquid. Over time, the dry, shrinking cork on the non-submerged side creates gaps between the bottle wall and cork, increasing oxidation risks and compromising quality.
Wines sealed with screw caps present no such concern, as upright or horizontal positioning does not affect quality. Therefore, when selecting wine display racks, horizontal shelves are preferable to accommodate the display requirements of wines with different packaging types.
